Auto sacramental and the Three Kings' parade (EN)
Every 5th January, Santillana del Mar revives one of the most unique traditions in northern Spain: the Auto Sacramental y Cabalgata de Reyes, a performance that transforms this medieval town into a living stage where history, faith and theatre merge into a unique experience.
This celebration, started in 1959, combines theatrical performance, popular tradition and neighbourhood participation in an incomparable historical setting.
Although no direct references to traditional autos sacramentales are preserved in Cantabria, there are historical indications that point to the presence of dramatic representations of a religious nature in the region. In Santillana del Mar, its importance as a historical and religious centre favoured the recovery of this type of cultural manifestation.
The current cavalcade was born thanks to the initiative of Don Antonio Niceas Martínez Gutiérrez, chaplain of the convent of the Poor Clare Mothers, who promoted the idea from the San Francisco Youth Centre. What began as a local project, built with enthusiasm and collective effort, quickly became an event deeply rooted in the life of the town.
A celebration born out of collective effort:
In its first editions, the lack of economic resources was made up for with creativity and commitment. The Poor Clare Mothers made the torches with ropes, resin and oil, as well as crowns and decorations. The villagers made the costumes with sheets and fabrics available, demonstrating that popular involvement was the real driving force behind the event.
Over time, the performance has evolved, incorporating live music, stage lighting and fireworks, without losing its original essence.
Recognition came over the years: in 1993 it was declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, and in 2009 it reached the category of Festival of National Tourist Interest, consolidating itself as one of the most emblematic events of Christmas in Spain.
