Cucaña Festival (EN)
In Puentedey, beneath its spectacular natural bridge, the Fiesta de la Cucaña becomes one of the most unique and entertaining celebrations in the Castilian countryside every summer.
An age-old tradition that blends games, history and celebration in a unique setting.
The cucaña, also known as the greased pole, is a traditional game involving climbing and making one’s way up a pole—vertical or horizontal—several metres long, which is smoothed or coated with slippery substances to make progress difficult.
In Puentedey, the celebration takes on a unique character: the pole is set up over the River Nela, beneath the iconic natural bridge, at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees. Participants must make their way along it whilst the crowd watches, laughing, applauding… and witnessing the inevitable falls into the water.
Tradition and history:
The festival is currently held on the third Saturday in August and is organised by the young men of the ‘quintos’ as a festive conclusion to the summer and the traditional agricultural work.
Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, with a blend of religious roots — such as mass beneath the so-called ‘Bridge of God’ — guild traditions linked to the countryside, and popular celebrations of a festive and ritual nature.
Throughout the day, the music of the dulzaina and drum fills the air with jotas, pasodobles and other traditional rhythms, creating an atmosphere of shared joy amongst locals and visitors alike.
