Feast of the Holy Thorn

A celebration of faith and community centered around one of Calaceite’s most cherished relics.

In the imposing parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, one of Calaceite’s most iconic landmarks, the relic of the Holy Thorn is kept, to which the town has professed a very special devotion for centuries. Its presence is part of the town’s religious and sentimental heritage, and every year, when Pentecost Monday arrives, this veneration becomes the centerpiece of a festival that preserves its solemn yet popular character.

Tradition holds that this relic comes from Christ’s crown of thorns and arrived in Calaceite during the Middle Ages, possibly brought by a pilgrim or a monk associated with the Order of Calatrava. Beyond its origin, what is truly important to the town is the continuity of its veneration and the spiritual significance it has retained over time. The Holy Thorn is not merely a historical object here, but a living presence within the collective memory.

The highlight:

One of the most moving moments of the day comes in the afternoon, when the relic is carried in procession through the town’s streets and Calaceite accompanies its passage in an atmosphere of reverence, respect, and deep devotion.

The festival begins at noon with a solemn Mass, during which hymns are sung and the relic is venerated. This liturgical moment marks the spiritual heart of the celebration and embodies the religious sentiment of many residents, for whom this date remains one of the most significant of the year. The church, with its imposing Baroque architecture, also provides a particularly solemn setting for a ceremony experienced with intense and shared emotion.

In the afternoon, the festival opens up to the entire town with the procession of the Holy Thorn, which winds through the streets of Calaceite and transforms the entire town into a stage for the celebration. This passage of the relic through the town center reinforces the communal dimension of the day, uniting faith with the daily life of the town and allowing devotion to leave the church and spread throughout the town.

Following the religious ceremonies, the day usually concludes with a concert or some form of entertainment in the square, giving the festival an open and shared conclusion, where the solemnity of worship extends into an atmosphere of neighborly gathering. This combination of devotion, tradition, and fellowship perfectly captures the character of this celebration, which is deeply rooted in the local identity.
