The Morisma (EN)

In Aínsa, La Morisma is one of the major events on the town’s festival calendar—a historical reenactment that transforms the medieval square into a setting filled with emotion, remembrance, and community participation, bringing to life one of the legendary tales most deeply rooted in the town’s identity.

La Morisma

A historical drama passed down from generation to generation that brings back to Aínsa the legendary pulse of its medieval past.

Every two years, the square in Aínsa ceases to be merely one of the most beautiful spots in the Aragonese Pyrenees and becomes the theatrical heart of an extraordinary tradition. La Morisma is not merely a theatrical performance, but a celebration deeply felt by the town, a folk drama passed down from generation to generation that keeps alive the legendary memory of the town’s reconquest. Its strength lies precisely in that continuity: in the ability of an entire community to continue telling its story through emotion, involvement, and shared pride.

The drama harks back to the time of King Garci Ximénez and the legendary episode in which, according to tradition, a flaming cross appeared above a holm oak to encourage the Christian troops facing the Muslims. That vision is said to have spurred the victory and became forever embedded in the collective imagination of Aínsa. La Morisma takes this story, transforms it into a verse performance, and brings it back to the streets and the square with a special intensity, bringing the past to life once more before the audience’s eyes.

The highlight:

The most special thing about La Morisma is seeing how the entire medieval square transforms into a living stage, with hundreds of participants involved in a performance that blends theater, history, legend, and collective sentiment in a truly unique atmosphere.

One of the most distinctive features of this celebration is its popular character. More than three hundred people take part in it, not only as improvised actors, but also in the creation of costumes, the preparation of the sets, the organization, and all the details that make the staging possible. This communal dimension makes La Morisma much more than a theatrical performance: it is a community event in which the entire town recognizes and represents itself.

Its historical value is equally remarkable. The festival has been documented since the 17th century and has maintained, over time, a unique prestige within Aragon’s festive heritage. This antiquity, combined with the survival of the text and tradition, makes La Morisma one of the most valuable expressions of folk theater transmitted orally and through lived experience. It is not a modern reenactment inspired by the past, but a celebration with deep roots and genuine continuity.

Attending La Morisma is also a way to discover Aínsa from a particularly intense perspective. The grandeur of the square, the town’s medieval character, and the involvement of its residents create a stage setting of immense power. For just over an hour, history and legend once again take center stage in the town, offering residents and visitors a cultural and festive experience that moves the heart both for what it tells and for the way it is shared.
