Under the title “The Holy Cross, as a Unifying Force,” the artist, Jesús Manuel Migallón Santillana, invites us to pause amid the fast pace of modern life to reflect on what truly matters: community, tradition, and togetherness. This poster captures that moment of pause when the entire town comes together around a shared celebration.
The image shows a group of people gathered around the Holy Cross, the central focus of the composition, accompanied by essential elements of the festival such as “el turro,” the rondallas, and the visitors—the protagonists of these days when the religious and the festive intertwine on May 2 and 3.
Fire takes on special prominence through the traditional “turros,” which not only mark the location of each cross but also symbolize the unity and shared energy within a town.
The poster also incorporates characteristic elements such as the guitar, the bandurria, and the “puñao,” carefully prepared by stewards, friends, and families to offer to those visiting the crosses. The herb-filled handkerchief is also featured, a distinctive item that many residents of Infantes wear on the 2nd as they walk through the streets.
The artist noted that this work pays homage to the Cross on Jara Street, known as the “Cruz La Fe de Infantes,” one of the oldest in the municipality. Although the origin of its name is unknown, it has stood in the same place since the early 18th century and represents the unity of the town. “A poster that not only announces a festival but also reflects our identity, our roots, and the value of sharing our traditions,” he stated.
The Cruces y Mayos festival in Villanueva de los Infantes, declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest since 1999, will be held again this year from April 30 to May 3. It is one of the town’s most iconic festivals, where the religious and the festive come together, making it one of the most important tourist attractions each year.
