The King Jayón Route offers a unique opportunity to discover the rich heritage, culture, and natural beauty of this region in southern Badajoz. This captivating route combines nature and heritage, making it a truly unique experience.
On this journey through the Southern Countryside, you’ll discover Llerena, a town designated as a Historic-Artistic Site with a rich cultural heritage; the Mina de la Jayona Natural Monument and the Virgen del Ara Hermitage, known as the “Sistine Chapel of Extremadura,” both in Fuente del Arco; the Arab fortress of Reina and its Visigothic chapel, and the Roman archaeological site of Regina in Casas de Reina.
The departure is scheduled between 7:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. from Plaza de España in Llerena, where participants must register and pick up their identification number. The walking route begins at the Mina de la Jayona, where hikers are transported by bus, and ends in Llerena.
Additionally, this year’s route coincides with the 1st Cheese Fair in Llerena. It’s the perfect opportunity to stay after enjoying the hike and the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Southern Countryside, and to savor the best local cuisine.
