King Jayón Route: a natural and monumental route through the Southern Countryside

The journey through the Southern Countryside offers a unique opportunity to discover the rich heritage, culture, and natural beauty of this region in southern Badajoz. As such, in addition to being a hiking trail, this attractive route combines nature and heritage, making it a truly unique experience.

The Ruta del Rey Jayón, now in its 24th year, spans 24 kilometers and takes you through Llerena, a town designated a Historic-Artistic Site that features significant monuments such as the Gothic-Mudejar-style parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Granada, as well as palaces, noble mansions, towers, sections of city walls, and monumental gates.

In the town of Fuente del Arco, visitors can explore the Virgen del Ara Hermitage, known as the Sistine Chapel of Extremadura, and the Jayona Mine, a Natural Monument since 1997.

Following the Route of King Jayón, you’ll also discover the Arab fortress of Reina and its Visigothic chapel, where the Virgin of the Snows is venerated. This spot also offers breathtaking views of the mountains and the countryside.

Once in Casas de Reina, a must-see stop along the route is the Roman site of Regina.

This edition also coincides with the celebration of the 1st Cheese Fair in Llerena. A unique opportunity to stay and, after enjoying the hiking and the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Southern Countryside, savor the exquisite local cuisine.

The Ruta del Rey Jayón 2026 is organized by the municipalities of Llerena, Fuente del Arco, Reina, and Casas de Reina, the Tomillo y Orégano Hiking Association, and the Llerena Municipal Tourism Office.

Regarding the schedule, the start is between 5:15 PM and 8:45 AM at Plaza de España in Llerena, where all participants must meet to register and pick up their corresponding bib number.

The organizers have set up refreshment stations and safety checkpoints along the route. Additionally, in the Roman City of Regina, buses will be available for those who wish to leave the hike. At that same point, hikers can also decide whether to continue to Llerena via a flat stretch or reach it via the Sierra de San Miguel.
