New Most Beautiful Villages of Spain 2026: meet the 4 new incorporations

25 Feb 2026 · 16:57

The Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain held its 13th National Assembly on Saturday in the iconic village of Santillana del Mar (Cantabria), a meeting that brings together the municipalities that form part of this prestigious network every year. During the session, one of the most eagerly awaited announcements was made: the four new villages that will join the association from 2026.

The quality commission, responsible for thoroughly evaluating the applications received by the association throughout the year and conducting technical visits to the villages that already belong to the network to verify that they continue to meet the required standards, has approved the incorporation of four locations. It has also agreed to initiate expulsion proceedings against one of the villages currently in the network, in accordance with the internal procedures and quality criteria governing the Association.

The new additions are: Alpuente (Valencia), Oseira (Ourense), Santa Gadea del Cid (Burgos), and Vilanova dos Infantes (Ourense), towns that stand out for their rich heritage, authenticity, and commitment to preserving their historical legacy.

Commitment to excellence and heritage conservation

The Assembly also provided an opportunity to take stock of the activities carried out during the year, review new projects, and address issues that are essential for the development of the member municipalities. Among the topics discussed, financing, housing, and the current challenges facing the rural world were of particular importance.

During the meeting, the president of the Association, Francisco Mestre, highlighted the importance of the rigorous selection process applied to applications.

"Of all the applications submitted this year, only four municipalities have successfully passed the demanding audit process. This shows that in our network, quality takes precedence over quantity," said Mestre, further emphasizing that the incorporation of these towns "enriches our territorial diversity and strengthens our network, always with a focus on excellence and the defense of heritage."

The new most beautiful villages in Spain 2026

Alpuente (Valencia)

The first Valencian municipality to join the network, Alpuente stands out for its extraordinary historical legacy. Its castle of Andalusian origin, the old walled enclosure, and the medieval layout of its streets make up a site of great interest. Added to this are its impressive aqueduct, the dinosaur footprints found in the surrounding area, and its paleontological museum. Set in a mountainous landscape, Alpuente offers a unique balance between nature, heritage, and rural identity.

Oseira (Ourense)

Oseira is known for being home to the Monastery of Santa María, one of the great landmarks of the Cistercian Order in Spain. This monumental complex, built between the 12th and 16th centuries, impresses with its architectural sobriety and historical significance. The small town that surrounds it is integrated into a serene mountain landscape, creating a destination where spirituality and natural beauty go hand in hand.

Santa Gadea del Cid (Burgos)

With a well-preserved medieval town center, Santa Gadea del Cid has kept its historical essence intact. Its imposing 14th-century church-fortress of Santa María presides over the town, recalling its strategic importance in times past. Defensive remains, emblazoned houses, and a calm atmosphere define this enclave in Burgos, which is of considerable heritage value.

Vilanova dos Infantes (Ourense)

Small in size but big in character, Vilanova dos Infantes is distinguished by its unique Torre da Homenaxe, a medieval symbol that dominates the town. Its stone streets, harmonious houses, and the tradition linked to the Virxe do Cristal make this historic village a living portrait of the most authentic Galicia.

A network that showcases the rural beauty of Spain

The Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, which brings together 122 locations in 2024, was created with the aim of promoting villages that are unique for their beauty, heritage, and cultural identity. Under a single quality brand, the network promotes cultural activities and initiatives both inside and outside Spain, thus contributing to the sustainable development of rural areas.

Part of the Federation of the Most Beautiful Villages in the World, the Spanish initiative is part of an international movement present in France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and Japan, among other countries. Since its creation in 2010 and its official presentation in 2013 with only 14 villages, the network has grown to become a national and international benchmark for prestige and excellence.
