Lerma: A Festival Calendar That Keeps Tradition Alive
Lerma isn’t just known for its historical and architectural heritage. Throughout the year, this town in Burgos maintains a vibrant calendar of festivals and cultural events that fill its streets and squares with life. Centuries-old traditions, popular celebrations, and cultural events make the town a gathering place for residents and visitors alike, showcasing a community that is deeply active and committed to its roots.
Much of this activity is sustained by the town’s network of organizations. Music groups, theater troupes, dance collectives, cultural associations, and religious brotherhoods organize performances, gatherings, and activities that keep the cultural calendar alive all year round. This dynamism helps Lerma maintain a constant festive atmosphere and ensures that its cultural offerings extend far beyond one-off celebrations.
Traditions that Mark the Calendar
Among the most deeply rooted celebrations, some have been part of the town’s identity for generations. This is the case with the festival of San Antón, closely linked to the folk traditions of rural life, or the singing of Las Marzas, which each year heralds the arrival of spring following an ancestral custom from northern Castile and Cantabria.
Holy Week also occupies a prominent place on the local calendar. One of the most unique moments takes place on Holy Thursday with the performance of the “Living Passion”; an event involving numerous residents that reenacts the Passion of Christ in a unique monumental setting, which lends a special atmosphere to the staging, especially since it takes place at night. The Palm Sunday procession, the Holy Burial procession, and the Encounter procession bring together religious brotherhoods and residents throughout the rest of Holy Week.
The Lerma Fair and Other Major Events
Alongside its traditions, Lerma also hosts high-profile events. Among these, the National Agricultural Machinery Fair and Automotive Fair stands out, considered a national benchmark within the sector and attracting professionals and companies from across the country. This event reinforces the town’s role as a key hub within the rural and agricultural sectors.
Another celebration that projects Lerma’s name beyond the region is the Baroque Festival, held on the first weekend of August. During these days, the town symbolically returns to the 17th century, the era of greatest splendor under the Duke of Lerma. Parades, theatrical performances, dances, markets… have elevated it, after 25 years, to the status of a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest.
These offerings are complemented by cultural and tourist initiatives such as “Discover Another Lerma Beneath Your Feet,” an activity that invites visitors to explore the town’s lesser-known spots and enriches the visitor experience on Saturdays in March and April, thereby also promoting the Wine Route and the Arlanza Designation of Origin.
In summer, highlights include the Villa de Lerma Music Project, Baroque Month with organ concerts, and the Nighttime Theatrical Tours… all leading up to the Main Festivities of the Nativity of Our Lady in September. But thanks to the monastic legacy left by the Duke, there is something to celebrate every month: St. Blaise, St. Joseph, St. Isidore, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Manciles… Carnival and Christmas are other celebrations marked on the calendar.
And on August 12, Lerma and the Arlanza region will become one of the best locations in Spain to view the Total Solar Eclipse. A unique event to enjoy the first eclipse of this kind on the peninsula in nearly 120 years. The town will be an ideal setting to enjoy the solar eclipse, as it lies at the heart of the path of totality and will be a prime location for observing this eclipse.
These are just a few examples from Lerma’s annual calendar of festivals, which reflects the vitality of a town that combines tradition, culture, and community involvement. Throughout the year, its celebrations showcase a town proud of its history and with a vibrant cultural life that continues to attract attention both within and beyond the province of Burgos. We look forward to seeing you!!
