The exhibition of the sambenitos from Tui Cathedral will be in Llerena throughout the month of March
"The Sambenitos of Tui: History, Memory, and Infamy" is a unique exhibition in Spain. This exhibition has come to Llerena through the Network of Jewish Quarters of Spain - Caminos de Sefarad, in collaboration with the City Council of Tui and the Llerena City Council.
Llerena is the first stop for this traveling exhibition, which will tour various locations across Spain.
Sambenitos are cloth banners on which the names, surnames, occupations, crimes, and sentences of people accused by the Inquisition were inscribed; they were intended to be publicly displayed in community spaces. Their purpose was to perpetuate the stigma against those who had been condemned and to warn the rest of society. Over time, most of them were destroyed. The sambenitos from Tui were spared this destruction.
For this reason, the exhibition on display in Llerena throughout the month of March constitutes a historical source of immense value and one of the most direct and rare testimonies to the activities of the Inquisition. It consists of 14 pieces from the Diocesan Museum of Tui.
The exhibition aims to highlight a heritage unique in Europe and to foster a contemporary dialogue on identity, justice, and historical reparation.
Admission to the exhibition is free.
