Descent of Nabatas

02 Mar 2026 · 16:48

In the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, among mountains and forests heralding the arrival of spring, one of the most unique and exciting events in the Sobrarbe region takes place: the descent of the nabatas down the Cinca River.

Every year for the past forty years, the traditional nabatas have set off from the town of Laspuña to travel down the river to the medieval village of Aínsa. It is not only an impressive visual spectacle, but also the revival of an ancient craft that for centuries was essential to life in these mountains: the transport of wood downriver.

The nabateros, dressed in traditional clothing and skillfully guiding these large platforms of logs, bring back memories to the waters of the Cinca and turn the descent into a real popular festival. Residents and visitors gather on the banks, on the bridges and, especially, in Aínsa, where the arrival is experienced as one of the most exciting moments of the year.

This celebration has established itself as one of the essential events in the spring calendar of the Aragonese Pyrenees, combining tradition, identity, and tourism in an incomparable natural setting.

Those who visit Aínsa at any time of the year can discover, in the grounds of its castle, a nabata that remains a symbol of this cultural heritage and a reminder of a trade that, thanks to the efforts of an entire region, continues to navigate between history and emotion.
