Bulnes
Bulnes is a parish belonging to the municipality of Cabrales and claims just over 30 inhabitants. It can only be reached by funicular or walking along a steep and narrow road, enabling it to preserve its heritage and great beauty unspoilt.
The traditional buildings of this tiny hamlet are built using limestone, which contrasts with their red clay roofs and windows and doors made from local wood. You can't help but delight in the beauty of this municipality, custodian of various treasures listed as forming part of the Cultural Heritage of Asturias, such as the Tower of the Castle or the Church of San Martín de Bulnes.
For mountain lovers, from Bulnes you can access - via steep and challenging paths - the Picu Urriellu, better known as Naranjo de Bulnes: the most mythical and well-known peak of the Picos de Europa, revered among Spanish mountaineers for its vertical cliff faces, especially those on the west side. This limestone fortress owes its name to the orange colour acquired by its walls in the sunshine.
Asturias is the largest cheese-producing area in Europe. Its lengthy tradition of grazing livestock, together with its orographic and climatic conditions, has motivated its inhabitants to specialise in the artisanal manufacture of cheeses of exceptional quality - notably Cabrales, which is made in Bulnes.
