Cudillero
Cudillero, a small municipality located on the Central West Coast of Asturias.
It has an incredible landscape, with unique beaches, green valleys, rivers and waterfalls, dizzying cliffs and mountains covered with 'brañas vaqueiras' (the meadows and cabins used by cowherds and the animals in their care).
The municipality encompasses three well-differentiated cultures:
• the 'mariñana' (fishermen and farmers located in the marina)
• the 'xalda' (villagers from the inner valleys) and
• the 'vaqueira' (herdsmen and women who occupied the highest parts of the mountains).
The main town of the area has the same name as the wider municipality: CUDILLERO. It is a picturesque fishing village -declared a Historic-Artistic Site- in which the cheerfully painted houses hang from the mountainside.
There are two distinct cultures in the village:
On the one hand the 'pixuetos' : the fishermen and inhabitants of the lower part of the town, where the houses hang from the mountainside.
On the other hand, the 'caízos,' who live in the main street into town, where tradesmen and traditionally the merchants are located.
The village of Cudillero has a dialect of its own known as PIXUETO, which is gradually falling into disuse.
In conclusion, this is undoubtedly an unforgettable village where the fishing environment is still an important part of the local economy and where gastronomy and landscape come together to form a unique vignette.
