Ponte Maceira
Ponte Maceira is a small town of just over 60 inhabitants that is located in the parish of Portor, belonging to the municipality of Negreira in the province of A Coruña. The Tambre River - one of Galicia's largest rivers - passes through here.
Highlights include the great Romanesque bridge, built over the Tambre in the thirteenth century, on the pillars of a previous Roman bridge. It consists of five arches and two smaller ones. The bridge connects the municipalities of Ames and Negreira. Also worthy of note are the original town itself with its ancient mill, dam, chapel of San Blas and the 19th-century Pazo de Baladrón.
This is an obligatory stop on the Camino Maritime de Santiago (part of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim's route) linking the city of the Apostle with Fisterra.
In Negreira you can also visit the Pazo do Cotón (14th century), the town's most significant historical-artistic complex along with with the chapel of San Mauro (San Amaro). This medieval fortress has undergone far-reaching refurbishments, making it hard to pinpoint its medieval roots.
It is worth mentioning the large fireplace and the stone gallery that can be seen from the main street, “Carreira de San Mauro”, an old Camino Real. This gallery connects the rooms of the Pazo with the Chapel of San Mauro via its triple stone arch. Inside you can see a dozen coats of arms of prestigious Galician families.
Among the festivities, it is worth mentioning the "Noche de Vela" in Pontemaceira in July, involving a concert lit only by the light of more than 500 candles adorning the bridge. The Fiestas de San Cristobal in the second week of July sees hundreds of cars parade through the streets to pay tribute to this saint. La Noite Folk is a traditional music festival held in the parish church of Covas.
Another noteworthy event is the Romanesque Fair on the first weekend of September, where the town revives the medieval era of one of its most famous characters, "Afonso Eanes do Cotón", troubadour of the Court of Alfonso X the Wise.
Negreira also has great natural wealth with several landscapes worthy of particular mention. Unique areas such as "El Mirador del Cotro", and significant waterways where you can practice fishing, or hike through idyllic landscapes.
With regard to food, the local meat is of excellent quality, as is the fresh produce and game. In the local restaurants you can try the famous "Cheesecake" recognised by illustrious chefs from all over Spain.
“Its cobbled streets seem to have resisted the passage of time. The Tambre River cuts through the village, inviting you to cool your feet on a hot day, or sit on its shore and relax to the sound of water.”
