Valverde de la Vera
Valverde de la Vera is a municipality located in the region of La Vera, and declared a Historic Site in 1970. Water flows through the village's cobbled streets thanks to the "regueras" (irrigation channels) which serve to facilitate its cleaning and also distribute the water to the vegetables gardens around the outskirts.
The village has traditional three-storey houses, combining ashlar with timber and brick or adobe, and beautiful arcades on granite columns, decorated with balls and mouldings.
Of its fourteenth-century castle, two defensive towers remain, today part of the church. The keep was built in the fifteenth century. The sixteenth-century Church of Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes Claras integrates a beautiful mixture of styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance, with both Churrigueresque and Romanesque altarpieces. In the main square we further displays of traditional architecture. Also noteworthy is its Gothic-style rollo, or pillory, symbol of the village.
On the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, visitors can witness the pilgrimage of the 'Empalaos'. Surrounded by mystery and anonymity, each accompanied by an assistant who lights their way and helps them if necessary, the penitents complete their Via Crucis in absolute silence through the beautiful streets of Valverde de la Vera. When they meet, they kneel in a sign of respect to each other, constituting one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
