Chinchón
Chinchón is one of the most picturesque and charismatic towns of the Community of Madrid: despite being so close to the capital it has retained its unique character. Its brown, grey and ochre landscape includes houses grouped on elevations that shelter its unique Plaza Mayor, and its intricate streets are testament to the town's life and history.
The urban centre of Chinchón was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1974 by the Council of Ministers. This promoted the expansion of the hospitality and tourism sector, making Chinchón a very well-known destination, both nationally and internationally.
It has a wide variety of tourist attractions, such as the Church of Nuestra Señora De la Asunción, whose main altar is presided over by a canvas by the painter Francisco de Goya; the Clock Tower; the “Lope de Vega” Theatre; the Monastery of the Augustinians (now a Parador); the Monastery of the M.M. Clarisas; various sanctuarys; the Castillo de los Condes, or Castle of the Counts; and the jewel of the region, the Plaza Mayor de Chinchón, declared the 4th material wonder of the Community of Madrid.
In addition, you can enjoy our traditional produce - anise, oil, garlic and wine - which form the foundation of our gastronomy: sample them in our many taverns and restaurants or buy in specialised establishments to take home with you.
Another important highlight are the various festive and cultural events, such as The Passion of Chinchón, of National Tourist Interest; Carnival and the accompanying Medieval Market; the Charity Bullfighting Festival in October, the oldest in Spain; our Patron Saint Festivities in August and various other events that take place throughout the year.
