Arties
Arties is located at an altitude of 1,143m at the junction of the rivers Valarties and Garona, in a small widening of the valley. Located 7km from the ski resort of Baqueira Beret and 7km from Vielha, in the province of Lleida, it is a hidden gem of the Catalan Pyrenees. In the centre of the village we can find part of its Cultural Heritage, highlighting the parish church of Sta. María de Arties, a Romanesque construction from the 11th to the 12th century. In this construction we can find two bell towers, the first one dating from the late 13th and early 14th century, and the second one built in Romanesque style ashlar masonry. The church has three naves separated by cylindrical pillars without bases. These pillars are crowned by a square, undecorated abacus from which the semicircular arches that support the walls start. However, what undoubtedly stands out in this construction is the quality of its many paintings. In addition to this church, there are other monuments such as the early 14th century Gothic church of San Juan, which is currently the site of temporary exhibitions; the remains of the castle of Arties or Entrasaigües; the tower and chapel of the Casa de los Portolà, from the 16th century; and the Arties baths. All in all, Arties offers a wide variety of options for a weekend spent wandering through its streets.
