Peñalba de Santiago
The approach to Peñalba de Santiago passes through one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Castilla y León region. A virgin valley dominated by lush oak forests, rivers and natural waterfalls, with the occasional small village nestling in the landscape and whose inhabitants -whose numbers are in decline-rarely intrude on the silence and tranquillity of their surroundings. This is a place where time seems to have come to a standstill: the Valley of Silence, virgin, natural and lush. The village, standing on the rock to which it owes its name, is covered by a white mantle in snowy winters. Rising up from among the rooftops we see the church of Santiago, in pure Mozarabic style, which was declared a National Monument in June 1931.
A Site of Cultural Interest, Peñalba de Santiago is located in the cradle of the Oza, in the heart of the Tebaida region in the province of León.
To access this town, declared a historic-artistic site in 1976, you must travel through the valley that in its time was also called the path of the monks. The walk to get to this viewpoint alone is worth it. From here you can see the local vegetation in all its magnificence, surrounded by peaks and sheer rock faces, with the summits of the Silla de la Mare, the Pico Tuerto and the Aguiana clearly visible.
