Frías
As it passes through the lands of the Merindades, north of Burgos, the Ebro river leaves on its shores the beautiful town of Frias, one of the smallest in Spain. Its surprising silhouette rises from a rock framed by the imposing Humión peak, the highest in the Montes Obarenes Natural Park.
The Castillo de los Velasco and the Church of San Vicente Mártir preside over this Historic-Artistic Site. Around these buildings are clustered the 'hanging houses' that cling to the rock in defiance of the laws of gravity.
In 1202, Alfonso VIII granted Frías privileges and promoted its economic development. Previously dependent on Navarre, Frías returned to Castile. As early as 1435, John II granted it the title of City. He exchanged it for Peñafiel with Pedro Fernández de Velasco, who wanted to subdue the city and strip it of its privileges, resulting in a popular revolt which is commemorated annually on the first weekend after 24th June, known as La Fiesta del Capitán.
