Hita
Hita retains its medieval old town, declared a historic site in 1965. Under Muslim rule a fortress was established at the top of the hill. During the thirteenth century a sizeable Jewish quarter was formed. A century later Juan Ruiz, Archpriest of Hita, wrote the Book of Good Love. In the fifteenth century, the village enjoys a last period of splendour with the Marquis of Santillana as its lord.
Archaeological remains are preserved from the ancient castle of Hita. Half a kilometre of the original walls are still standing along with Puerta de Santa Maria in Gothic style. Below one of these stretches of wall is the Palenque, or arena. The Plaza Mayor or Archpriest's Square was a marketplace in the Middle Ages and much of its housing belonged to Jewish families.
In the upper quarter, we find the Archpriest's house which is now a small museum dedicated to the Book of Good Love. We can also visit the ruins of the Church of San Pedro, and the Gothic-Mudejar church of San Juan, located a little higher up.
Halfway up the hill we find the neighbourhood of Los Bodegos. This comprises a group of cave-houses of medieval origin excavated out of the hillside. Lower down we find the cellars of the Jews. These are around a hundred caves used from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century for the conservation of wine.
The Medieval Festival of Hita has been declared a festival of National Tourist Interest. It is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of July and has been since 1961. It is a theatre festival that commemorates the Archpriest of Hita, Juan Ruiz, his work and his time. "Botargas", or masked characters, parade through the streets with the town's residents. The carnival ends with a representation of the fight between Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma. The Palenque hosts chivalric tournaments with jousts on foot and on horseback.
In terms of cuisine, it is worth highlighting the local dish of lamb or kid goat roasted in a wood oven. Not to mention migas, various pork products and honey from the Alcarria.
