Teguise

Located in the northeast of the island of Lanzarote, the village of Teguise was one of the first towns founded in the Canary Islands.Capital of Lanzarote until 1847, it preserves a remarkable set of buildings of great historical-artistic value. Highlights include the castle of Santa Barbara, now converted into a Museum of Piracy; the Spínola Palace, located in an 18th-century manor house; the old church of Guadalupe, and the convent of San Francisco.

A stroll through Teguise enables the traveller to get an idea of what life was like in Lanzarote during the early times of the colonial presence. In addition to the historical heritage, the former island capital has museums such as the Casa del Marqués de Herrera y Rojas, and the Casa Perdomo. Of special cultural interest is the Casa del Timple, devoted to introducing the uninitiated to the sound of this unique musical instrument of the Canary Islands.
