Sos del Rey Católico
Sos del Rey Católico is located in the northern part of the province of Zaragoza, in the region of the Cinco Villas, near the Regional Community of Navarre. On the highest promontory, the 'Peña Feliciana', we find the castle to which the town owes its origins, with the lowest part housing the medieval Jewry, now known as the Barrio Alto.
Some prehistoric and Roman remains have been found in the municipality, but the town's current location dates back to the 10th century, during the Reconquista. Christian border stronghold and eventually strategic location between the kingdoms of Aragon and Navarre, Sos del Rey Católico remains to this day a spectacular walled town. Of the seven town gates still standing, the main one is that of Zaragoza. The main street, Calle Fernando el Católico, begins here and leads to the main square, where the Town Hall is located. A good way to see the medieval wall and its gates is to take a walk around the outside of the town.
One event particularly stands out in Sos's intense history: the birth of King Ferdinand II, known as Ferdinand the Catholic, on 10 March, 1452 in the house of the Sada family.
Sos del Rey Católico is a town of cobbled streets filled with beautiful stone houses and their wooden eaves, ashlar façades displaying coats of arms, and Gothic and Renaissance windows. Declared a historic-artistic site in 1968, it is one of the most beautiful villages in Aragon. Walking through its streets and exploring all its inviting nooks and crannies is an experience that you should not miss.
