Zuheros
Zuheros is a small town in the southeast of the province of Córdoba, in the Subbética region. It lies at the border between the Sierra Subbética Natural Park and the Cordoban countryside.
It has approximately 700 inhabitants, known as "Zuhereños", and sits 662 metres above sea level.
Zuheros is one of those villages that has managed to maintain the charm of another era through time. Its streets are narrow and winding, with many small squares and corners full of tradition. Between its whitewashed houses, visitors will catch plentiful glimpses of the mountain range in the distance, dotted with olive groves. This is why it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category Historical-Artistic Ensemble (2003).
Zuheros offers the visitor a wide range of options to enjoy with the five senses. Proof of its vast history is the Cueva de los Murciélagos (Bat Cave), an archaeological site of great importance and beauty which has been declared a Mixed Natural Monument. The walk through the cave is complemented by a visit to the Ecomuseum (Cave Interpretation Centre) and the town's Archaeological Museum, where findings related to the cave and other neighbouring sites are on display.
There are two further museums in Zuheros. In the Juan Fernández Cruz Museum of Popular Customs and Arts we find a large number of objects that constituted a “modus vivendi” for the inhabitants of the town. On the other hand, the Francisco Poyato Museum-Studio, located in a typical Andalusian building, houses works by the painter that are fundamentally surreal in nature (drawings, painting and sculpture mainly).
Walking through the maze of slopes and dead ends we will come across the Castle of Zuheros, which occupies a spectacular position on a huge cliff; and the Church of the Remedies, apparently built on the site of the town's ancient mosque.
Zuheros landscapes and surroundings, in the middle of the mountains, make it an ideal base from which to enjoy nature, walking the paths of the Bailón River or the Vía Verda de la Subbetica (an old mining railway now converted to a footpath and cycling track).
In short, Zuheros offers us many ways in which to enjoy its cultural, natural and ethnographic heritage, all in a unique and exceptional environment that will certainly not leave you indifferent: a living paradise.
