Description

The Torreón de Fernán González is a medieval defensive tower located in Covarrubias, Burgos, also associated with the traditional name of Torreón de Doña Urraca. It is considered one of the oldest and most emblematic monuments of the town, linked to the history of the Castilian counts and the defense of the ford of the Arlanza River. Its construction dates back to the 10th century or the first half of that century, and several sources describe it as a work of Mozarabic tradition or, in more general terms, pre-Romanesque military architecture. In 1931 it was recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest, which reinforced its patrimonial protection. The building has a rectangular floor plan and truncated pyramid-shaped volume, with ashlar masonry and very thick walls; the original entrance was located high up and the complex came to have arrow slits and battlements. The local tradition links it with Fernán González and with the legend of Doña Urraca, although this episode belongs to the legendary sphere and not to the proven historical one. Inside, there is an exhibition of medieval weapons and siege machines, which makes the tower a first-rate heritage and visitable resource within the historic center of Covarrubias. Some descriptions add that the complex includes later phases and additions, such as walls and the manor house, but the main nucleus is still the early medieval tower.
