Description
The Aljama Tower is a tower-door integrated in the old walled enclosure of Alpuente, in the historic center of the municipality, above the current headquarters of the Town Hall. It is the most outstanding vestige of the old Muslim aljama and functioned as the main access to the town, also articulating government and contracting functions. Its origin is medieval, linked to the Andalusian and late medieval period; the sources place it as one of the fourteen towers of the wall of Alpuente. In the 16th century a large town hall was attached to it, so the complex combines defensive architecture with later civilian uses. It also preserves documented elements of interest, such as the halls of Courts and plasterwork of the fourteenth century. Traditionally linked to the local administration, the tower has maintained for centuries a strong institutional centrality in the life of the town. Today it continues to be one of the most representative heritage landmarks of Alpuente, within the protected walled complex of the municipality, and is still in good condition.
