Description
The Pena Reservoir is a reservoir on the Pena River located in the municipality of Valderrobres, in the Matarraña region, at the foot of the Puertos de Beceite. It is a hydraulic infrastructure integrated in a landscape of mountain ranges, ravines, masses of pine forest and dry crops, with a sheet of water that reaches 120-129 hectares and a capacity of 18.5 million cubic meters. Its curved dam is 41 meters high and 119 meters long at the crest. Its construction began in 1909 and was completed in 1930, with the flooding of several farmhouses in the surrounding area. The reservoir had an eminently agricultural use and is one of the most unique hydraulic works in the area, both for its size and its role in the transformation of the Pena valley. Also mentioned is its peculiar system of floodgates and its survival of an attempt to blow it up during the Civil War. The visitor is interested in the combination of water and mountain scenery, the presence of viewpoints and access by track from Valderrobres and Beceite, and for being a starting point for walks and simple routes around the dam and the tail of the reservoir. It is part of the natural attraction of the Matarraña and is highlighted in the regional tourist offer for its scenic and recreational value.
How to get there
By car: from Valderrobres, take the A-1414 road towards Fuentespalda; after a few kilometers there is a signposted detour to the reservoir along a paved road that leads to the dam. There is also access from Beceite, but the route from Valderrobres is usually the most comfortable for vehicles. Parking: there is parking area near the dam and the recreational area; the available information describes it as a parking area near the small buildings and the pedestrian access. Trail: from the parking area, access to the dam and immediate surroundings is short and on foot; for routes along the reservoir or linking with other trails, the length and gradient vary and there is no single reliable official data. Footwear: closed shoes with good soles; if you go down to the shore, better shoes that can get wet. Best time: spring, autumn and early daylight hours in summer. Warnings: the trail is rural and can be narrow; recent reviews cite that some sections no longer allow backtracking around the dam, so plan to go and return by the same route.
