Description
The Senda de la Ermita de los Santos Mártires is a short hiking route in Briones (La Rioja), designed as a walk of proximity between the town center and its agricultural environment. It starts in the village and leads to the hermitage of the Santos Mártires, in a landscape of transition between vineyards and fields characteristic of the Rioja Alta. The main interest of the route lies in the reading of the landscape: from the path you can see the agricultural plots, the hillside structure on which Briones sits and the open views of the natural and rural environment of the municipality. The town is located on a hill about 80 meters high, with the northern slope cut towards the Ebro, a relief that helps to understand the relationship between the settlement and the valley. Due to its typology, it is a short and accessible path for a quiet visit, useful both to get to know the rural edge of the village and to complete a tourist stay in Briones. It is part of the set of hiking and nature resources associated with the municipality, closely linked to the Rioja Alta wine-growing landscape. In the sources consulted, there is no specific environmental protection for this path or an associated local legend; its value is mainly scenic, cultural and connected to the minor religious heritage of the surroundings.
How to get there
By car: from Briones, go out towards the area of the hermitage following the local accesses that go up from the town center towards the southern slope of the hill of Mendiguerra; the geolocalized reference places the beginning in the immediate surroundings of the town. Parking: it is advisable to leave the car in Briones and continue on foot; there is no specific parking area for the trail. Trail: short, short out-and-back route; no reliable official distance or elevation gain available. Footwear: closed shoes with grippy soles, suitable for dirt roads and possible uneven sections. Best time of year: spring and autumn. Warnings: there may be sun exposure and agricultural terrain; respect farms, closures and signs, and avoid leaving the trails.
