Bagergue-Unha Trail
42.71018, 0.90252
Description
The Bagergue-Unha Path is a short, linear route that links two villages in the Aran Valley along the old path that descends from the upper part of Bagergue to Unha, following the track towards the Barradós valley. It is about 1.8 km long and has an approximate height difference of 139 m, making it a short and accessible hike in the high mountain environment of Aran. The route runs along the Unhòla river, with riparian vegetation that provides shade and freshness, and crosses a landscape of forest and Pyrenean slopes. In some sections there are views of the riverbed and the immediate surroundings of the valley, which allows us to appreciate the transition between the traditional hamlet of Bagergue and the natural environment that surrounds it. Its main interest lies in combining gentle hiking with rural heritage: it allows leaving from the square and the Romanesque church of Sant Fèlix in Bagergue and reaching the center of Unha by a historical road of communication between villages. Near the route there are remains of an old flour mill in Bagergue and another mill preserved in Unha, elements that reinforce the ethnographic value of the path. The route is especially relevant as a nature walk and as a scenic access to the heritage of the Aran Valley, a mountain area well recognized in guides and active tourism proposals. Its simplicity, proximity to water and riverside environment make it a common choice for visitors looking for a short excursion with local identity.
How to get there
By car: from Bagergue, leave towards the center of the village and locate the beginning of the trail in the upper part, next to the path that descends towards Unha; the connection is made by a rural road signposted in the local guides.. Parking: it is advisable to leave the vehicle in the authorized areas of Bagergue and continue on foot; in high season parking may be limited. Trail: linear route of about 1.6-1.8 km each way, with an estimated time of 35-45 minutes and moderate descent/ascent depending on the direction; easy difficulty. Footwear: hiking shoes or light boots with grippy soles. Best season: spring, summer and early fall. Warnings: there may be ice or mud in winter and after rain; it is not a universally accessible route and there are steep sections.
