Description
The Salto del Cabrero is a large gorge or gorge of limestone rocks located in the environment of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, in the municipality of Grazalema, Cadiz. It is not a waterfall, but a form of high mountain relief and karst landscape, generated by the geological history of the limestone massif of Grazalema, with very marked contrasts of walls, cuts and narrow passages. The park occupies 53,411.27 ha and extends through the municipalities of Cadiz and Malaga, in the westernmost part of the Betic Mountain Range. The most striking feature of the site is the huge gap between rock walls, visible from the trail that connects the Puerto del Boyar with Benaocaz. The route offers wide views over mountain ranges and valley, and allows to appreciate the power of the geological modeling in an abrupt relief, with limestone cuttings and sensation of step fitted between mountains. In the tourist descriptions of the itinerary are highlighted vertical walls of great height and a very visible narrowing of the gorge. Its main interest is scenic and geological: it is one of the best known natural landmarks of the Sierra de Grazalema and is part of a protected area of great environmental value. The park is recognized as a Biosphere Reserve and is also part of the Natura 2000 network, with protection figures such as ZEPA and LIC. For the visitor, the Salto del Cabrero is of interest for its scenic character and for explaining at a glance the limestone landscape of Grazalema, with forms of dissolution, escarpments and ancient roads of communication between mountain villages. The exact location associated with the resource places it in the surroundings of Grazalema, next to the traditional hiking route to Benaocaz.
How to get there
By car: reach Benaocaz from Grazalema or Ubrique by the regional roads of the Sierra de Cádiz; the official starting point is at the end of Calle Pajaruco, on the northern edge of the town center.
