The Purón River Gorge is a deep natural canyon that cuts through the Sierra de Arcena, separating the provinces of Álava and Burgos and connecting the Valderejo Natural Park with the Tobalina Valley. Physically, it is an approximately 8-kilometer route between the towns of Herrán (Burgos) and Lalastra (Álava), with an elevation gain of about 300 to 400 meters. The geological landscape features steep rocky cliffs, while the flora is characterized by lush vegetation consisting of pine, holm oak, and boxwood forests, providing ample shade along most of the trail. The Purón River, with its crystal-clear waters, flows alongside the trail, creating a landscape of pristine nature and crystal-clear water. From the viewpoint, you can see the deep gorge that connects two valleys, featuring a Roman bridge and the ruins of the 9th-century San Roque hermitage, as well as the abandoned village of Ribera, a site that adds historical and cultural significance to the route. This trail is listed in reputable hiking guides as one of the most beautiful routes in the Basque Country and is protected within the Valderejo Natural Park. The best time to visit is in spring or summer, when the vegetation is densest and temperatures are pleasant; it’s best to avoid winter due to possible closures or difficult conditions.
