Ruinas Romanes de Pollentia

The Roman Ruins of Pollentia are an archaeological heritage site, corresponding to the ancient Roman city of Pollentia, in Alcúdia (Mallorca, Balearic Islands). It is the main Roman urban complex preserved on the island and one of the most important archaeological sites of the Balearic archipelago. Pollentia was founded after the Roman conquest of Mallorca in 123 B.C., linked to the action of the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus. The enclave experienced its greatest development between the 1st century B.C. and 3rd century A.D., when it reached a notable urban entity and came to play a prominent role as the Roman center of the Balearic Islands. The site is organized in three areas that can be visited: the Portella, the Forum and the Theater. In the foral area, elements of great interest have been documented, such as the Capitoline Temple, other minor temples and tabernae, along with remains that allow us to understand the urban fabric and daily life of the Roman city. Its location, south of the historic center of Alcúdia and in the surroundings of the medieval walls, reinforces the historical value of the site, where the visit is also complemented by the Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia, which preserves materials found in the excavations.
