Description

The Roque de Garachico is a coastal volcanic islet located in front of the town of Garachico, in the north of Tenerife, within the municipality of the same name. It has an approximate area of 5 hectares and reaches about 77 meters high, separated from the coast by about 300 meters of sea; its origin is related to basaltic lava flows modeled by marine erosion. It is a very visible geomorphological element in the coastal profile, with great scenic interest. What can be seen is a rocky promontory of sparse vegetation, dominated by cactus and tabaibas, which stands out for its isolation and the visual strength it brings to the marine environment of Garachico. Its importance is not only aesthetic: it is protected as a Natural Monument and is part of the Natura 2000 Network as a ZEC and ZEPA, for the presence of habitats and seabirds of interest. On its walls nesting species such as the little shearwater, the Bulwer's petrel and the Madeira storm petrel, the main reason for its protection. The regulations and municipal tourist information insist that it must be kept free of visitors, precisely to preserve its ecological and scenic value. It is one of the most unique natural landmarks of the coast of Garachico and a reference in the reading of the volcanic landscape of the region.

How to get there

By car: from the center of Garachico, head towards the coastline and the old port area; the rock can be seen from several points of the promenade and the waterfront. Parking: you can leave your car in streets and public parking lots in the town center; there is no specific parking lot next to the rock. Path: There is no access path to the islet; the view is from the coast. Footwear: comfortable shoes for walking along sidewalks and coastal areas. Best season: all year round; best when the sea is calm and the sky is clear. Warnings: the islet is not freely accessible; it is advisable to respect closures, boundaries and the protection of the natural space.[10
