Description

The Odra River is a natural fluvial resource of the fertile lowlands of Castrojeriz, in Burgos, where it flows as a riverbank channel associated with groves and natural spaces near the town center. In this section it is part of the lower Odra, a wide and smooth valley embedded between moors and cereal plains, with a landscape very representative of the Burgos Tierra de Campos. The most interesting thing for the visitor is the contrast between the open agricultural environment and the humid strip of the river, where riverside woods and vegetation linked to the water are preserved. In this environment you can observe birds of fluvial environments and, in the nearby steppe areas, species characteristic of the moors and crops, which gives the route a remarkable scenic and ornithological interest. Its value is not only scenic: the Odra has been the object of environmental regeneration and flood control actions in the section that affects Castrojeriz, with the aim of reinforcing its natural values and reducing overflows. In addition, the river is integrated in local itineraries and nature observation proposals, which makes it a relevant part of the rural environment of the town.

How to get there

By car: from the center of Castrojeriz, follow the local accesses to the banks of the Odra and the paths next to the town center; the geographic reference point is the area around the river as it passes through the town. Parking: use the urban parking lot of Castrojeriz or authorized areas near the historic center; there is no specific parking for this section. Trail: free and flat route along paths and riverbanks; there is no single official route or reliable data on distance/difficulty. Footwear: comfortable walking shoes, with grippy soles if the terrain is wet. Best time: spring and early fall. Warnings: access depends on the condition of roads and adjoining farms; avoid encroaching on crops and respect the riverbank and private properties.
