The Mundaka estuary is the final stretch of the Oka River estuary, in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where freshwater and Cantabrian water mix in a wide tidal flats with marshes, beaches and sandbanks. From the surroundings of Mundaka, the mouth of the estuary, the intertidal fields and the low coastal landscape that characterizes this sector of Bizkaia can be clearly seen. Its natural interest lies in the tidal dynamics and the avifauna linked to the wetlands: it is an enclave of passage and refuge for waterfowl and waders, as well as an area well known for the left wave of Mundaka, one of the most famous surfing spots in the Basque Country. The estuary is part of a protected area of great environmental and scenic value. The visit allows you to understand how the tide completely transforms the landscape in a few hours, going from exposed channels and mud to a wide and changing sheet of water. It also provides a good context for observing the port, the island of Izaro on the horizon and the Urdaibai coastline. The best time is usually at mid or high tide, when the mouth shows its estuarine character best; for birdlife, the first and last hours of the day usually give better results. It should be foreseen that the experience changes a lot depending on the state of the tide and the season.
