Puente Románico de Roda

The Romanesque Bridge of Roda is a medieval stone bridge over the Isábena River, in the immediate surroundings of Roda de Isábena, in the region of Ribagorza (Huesca). It is a work of a single slightly pointed arcade, linked to the historical landscape of the town and the traditional crossing of the valley. The sources date it to the 12th century, although some authors point to possible earlier origins, in the Roman tradition. For its proportions, it stands out as a slender and very recognizable piece: the main arch saves a light close to 20 meters, and the whole reaches about 54 meters in length, 2.5 meters wide and about 11 meters high above the water level. Its stonework and medieval construction technique make it both architecturally and scenically interesting, especially because of the relationship between the bridge, the riverbed and the Ribagorzano relief. The visit is interesting because it is one of the most unique heritage elements of the historical access to Roda de Isábena, a town of great monumental value and declared a Historic Site. The bridge is not only a functional passage: it is part of the cultural landscape of the town and helps to understand the medieval organization of the territory and the traditional communications in the Isábena valley. Its relevance is mainly patrimonial and visual, as a preserved testimony of medieval stone engineering in a rural environment of high historical quality.
