Pozo de los Frailes is a small hamlet of the municipality of Níjar integrated in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a short distance from San José. It is not a great isolated monument, but a rural nucleus of contained scale that conserves part of the traditional image of the interior of the park, with village atmosphere and dry Mediterranean landscape. Its interest for the visitor is in the whole: the hamlet, the environment of wadis and volcanic hills, and the proximity to some of the best known landscapes of the park. In the village stands out the restored waterwheel, linked to the old water extraction, and in its surroundings the official trail to Los Escullos allows you to see the volcanic domes, formed about eight million years ago under the sea. The area is part of a protected natural area of high geological and biological value, with flora adapted to the aridity and the presence of traditional elements of water culture. The official itinerary also highlights the observation of historic waterwheels and the scenic interest of the route. The best time to visit is usually spring and autumn, when the heat is milder and the landscape is more comfortable. At midday the environment offers very harsh lights; the early hours and late afternoon give a better reading of the relief and the hamlet.
