The Pozo de la Nieve is a historic snow pit, a construction designed to store compacted snow to transform it into ice during the warmer months. In the province of Jaén this type of wells were common, and in this case a remarkable example associated with the traditional architecture of the Sierra de Segura is preserved. According to municipal information, the well is about 6 meters in diameter and about 8 meters deep, although the original stone bottom was not reached in the restoration. The interest of the place is not only in the structure, but in its context: it is located on the way up to the castle, very close to the bullring, next to cobbled threshing floors and remains linked to the old defensive and artisan access of the municipality. From the surroundings it is easy to understand how this space combined productive function, transit and defense, with the Torre de las Eras and several walls as a backdrop. It is a heritage resource linked to a winter exploitation system that no longer exists, used to preserve food and for medicinal purposes. Its value resides in that it allows to read the daily life of the mountain range before the modern refrigeration, and for that reason it appears mentioned in local routes on the neveros of Segura de la Sierra. The visit is more grateful with side light, early in the morning or late afternoon, when the relief of the well and the monumental complex can be better appreciated. In summer, the contrast between the dry environment and the original function of ice storage helps to better understand the place.
