The Pozo da Ferida is a spectacular waterfall approximately 30 meters high that plunges forcefully into a circular pool surrounded by native forest, located on the natural border between the municipalities of Viveiro and Xove, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. The waterfall is formed by the Xudreiro or Loureiro River, a tributary of the Landro River, and creates a natural pool of great beauty in a setting nestled among the Montes do Buio, a small mountain range that separates the parishes of Monte (Xove) and Chavín (Viveiro). The pool is flanked by alders, willows, oaks, and ferns, creating a lush landscape reminiscent of a mysterious rainforest. From the viewing point, visitors can observe the water’s free fall and the dark-colored pool, whose hue is attributed to a local legend: the story of a giant woman from Galician mythology who, laden with bundles of vegetation for manure, fell into the pool and, due to the impact, was never able to get up, giving rise to the name and color of the waters. Although the area is not part of a protected natural space, it is located near sites of high ecological value such as Monte Maio and the Landro River, both designated as Sites of Community Importance. The best time to visit the Pozo da Ferida is in late spring and summer, when the water flow is abundant, the surroundings are at their most beautiful, and a dip in the pool is especially tempting.
