The Pozas de Mougás are a system of river pools and waterfalls formed by the Peito River (also known as the Regueiro do Foxo, Peiteal Stream, or As Pías Stream) and its tributaries, on the western foothills of the Serra da Groba, within the municipality of Oia, in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia. The water cascades forcefully over granite ledges, creating a succession of pools of crystal-clear, clean water, among which the iconic “Poza Grande” stands out—a natural pool accessible beyond a waterfall that serves as a natural spa. The setting, hidden among forests of birch, pine, and eucalyptus trees, offers a landscape of great beauty with granite rocks and rugged terrain, ideal for getting away from conventional tourism. The pools are one of the most important tourist attractions in the province of Pontevedra, with waters that are safe for swimming, especially for children. The area is well-signposted along the trail and lies on the Ruta Máxica de Oia, whose prehistoric origins are evidenced by petroglyphs dating back more than 4,000 years in the surrounding area, such as those at Pedra Lan and A Cabeciña. The best time to visit is in the summer, when the pools become a popular swimming spot, or during the rainy season, when the water flow is more intense and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular.
