Description

The Pozas de las Salinas de Poza de la Sal are part of the great historical salt works of this town in Burgos, located on the eastern edge of the Páramo de Masa, where the terrain descends sharply towards the Bureba. The enclave sits on a diapir of great geological singularity, described as a depression of about 2.5 km in diameter, with evaporitic outcrops and a very characteristic morphology that explains the presence of salt on the surface. The most interesting thing for the visitor is the combination of landscape and traditional industrial heritage. Here are preserved elements linked to salt extraction, such as wells, canals, galleries, huts and warehouses, which allow us to understand how this resource was used from Roman times to the present day. The tour offers a clear reading of the link between the geology of the place and the human activity that shaped the environment. Its relevance is twofold: on the one hand, it is one of the most didactic and recognizable diapirs in Castilla y León; on the other hand, it maintains the historical value of a salt exploitation that gave identity to the town. The complex was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest as a Historic Site in 2001, which reinforces its heritage and landscape interest. For a demanding visit, the site stands out for its ability to explain, in the same space, an exceptional geological phenomenon and a cultural landscape built around salt.
