Description
The Iberian settlement of San Antonio is an archaeological site of Iberian heritage located in Calaceite, in the province of Teruel, on the hill of San Cristobal, about 2 kilometers from the town center. It is one of the most important settlements in the area and is part of the Iberian Route in Lower Aragon. Research places its occupation between the 6th century B.C. and its abandonment and destruction around the 2nd century B.C. The development of the settlement was organized in two phases: first it occupied the highest part of the hill and, at a later stage, it extended towards a hillside. The site preserves outstanding defensive elements, such as a wall built in the 3rd century B.C., several towers and a moat. It also has a characteristic urban layout, with a central street and terraced houses on either side, and the remains of cobblestone streets and rectangular houses, which are clearly visible during the visit. Its excavation was promoted by Juan Cabré in 1903. The complex was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and later declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2003, which confirms its relevance within the archaeological heritage of Calaceite and Matarraña.
