Description
Playa del Silencio is a coastal spot in Cudillero, in the parish of Novellana and the surroundings of Castañeras, on the western coast of Asturias. It is a natural beach of pebbles and rock, also known as Playa d'El Gavieiru, wedged between quartzite cliffs that give it the appearance of an amphitheater open to the Bay of Biscay. Its length is around 500 meters, although the useful aspect varies with the tide. The most striking thing is its strong landscape and geomorphological value: a secluded cove, without immediate urbanization or direct road access to the sand, which retains a very little altered image. From the viewpoint and the access path you can see the shell-shaped beach, the rocky wall that protects it and the contrast between the sea, the boulders and the coastal vegetation. The interest of the visit is in the whole: abrupt coastal landscape, calm atmosphere and clear reading of the marine processes and the modeling of the cliffs. It is an enclave very cited in guides and tourist information of Asturias for its scenic beauty and for representing in a very clear way the Cantabrian coast of the western area. In addition, the environment is included in the protected areas of western Asturias, which reinforces its environmental relevance. Because of its access on foot, its character of virgin beach and its great visual value, it is one of the most representative natural resources of the council of Cudillero.
How to get there
By car: from Cudillero or Novellana, take the N-632 towards Castañeras and follow the signs to the beach. Parking: there is a small parking lot next to the access, with very limited capacity; the Town Hall recommends leaving the car in the village.[9 Path: access on foot by road, pedestrian path and stairs; the Town Hall indicates about 25 minutes and Asturias Tourism indicates about 500 m of pedestrian route. Footwear: closed shoes with grippy soles; if you go down to the shore, booties or similar because of the boulders. Best season: spring, June and September. Warnings: no services or direct road access; in summer, animal access to the beach is prohibited from 1/06 to 30/09.
