Pilón de las Huertas

Description
Pilón de las Huertas is a rural spot in San Martín de Trevejo, in the Sierra de Gata (Cáceres), linked to a traditional fountain and the start of a cobblestone path that leads to the chestnut grove. It is located in an environment of transition between the historical center and the spaces of orchard and low mountain, very typical of this serragatina villa seated to the feet of the Jálama. Its location, in a landscape of water and cultivation, explains its interest as a point of passage and as a testimony of the historical relationship between the town and its natural resources. The most attractive thing about the place is precisely this combination of functional simplicity and landscape value: the pylon, the fountain and the old road allow us to understand how the accesses to the cultivation areas and the use of water were organized. For the visitor, it is interesting for its traditional atmosphere, for being the beginning of a route to the chestnut grove and for offering a clear reading of the rural territory of San Martín de Trevejo, where water has conditioned the way of life and the layout of the routes. Its relevance is more ethnographic and scenic than monumental. It is part of the set of resources that help to interpret the town, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with category of Historic Site, and fits in the image of San Martín de Trevejo as a town closely linked to popular architecture, irrigation and historic roads. There is no associated local legend in the sources consulted.
How to get there
By car: arrive in San Martín de Trevejo and enter through the lower part of the historic quarter; the pylon is located at the eastern exit of the village, at the end of Calle del Puerto and before the beginning of the road to the port of Santa Clara. Parking: it is advisable to leave the vehicle in the authorized areas of the village and continue on foot through the historic quarter. Parking: it is advisable to leave the vehicle in the authorized areas of the village and continue on foot through the town, because the immediate access is narrow and linked to historical streets. Path: it is not an independent route; it is part of the start of local itineraries towards the chestnut grove and the road. If you continue walking, the usual reference for SL-CC 208 is a 6.9 km circular route with MIDE 1-2-2-2. Footwear: comfortable shoes with grippy soles, due to the cobblestones and slopes. Best season: autumn, spring and the first mild months of winter. Warnings: narrow streets, uneven road surface and pedestrian traffic; in wet weather the cobblestones can be slippery.
