Penya Golosa, also known as Penyagolosa or Peñagolosa, is the great summit of Castellón and one of the most recognizable landscape landmarks of the Valencian Community. Although it has been catalogued here as a viewpoint, in reality it functions as a natural summit-viewpoint: its interest lies in the wide panoramic view over the mountainous interior and in the contrast between rocky, pine forests and mid-mountain slopes. The mountain is over 1,800 meters high, which explains its visual dominance over the surroundings. From the visit one can appreciate the isolated and resounding character of the massif, often nicknamed "Stone Giant". The most common ascent starts from the Monastery of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa and crosses the Barranc de la Pegunta, a micro-reserve of flora with remarkable botanical value. This combination of landscape, geology and vegetation is one of the reasons why the summit appears recurrently in hiking routes and nature guides of Castellón. It is a particularly recommended place with good visibility, when the air is clear and the surrounding mountains are clearly visible. Spring and autumn usually offer the best conditions for walking and enjoying the views, while in winter it can be cold, windy and snowy at high altitudes. Because of its symbolic significance and for being the highest mountain in the province, the Penyagolosa also has a prominent presence in the tourist and hiking promotion of the area.
