The Peñón de Zaframagón is a great limestone escarpment of 584 meters of altitude, modeled by the action of the Guadalporcún river, which opens here the Garganta del Estrechón between very abrupt walls. It is located in the last foothills of the Serranía de Grazalema, on the border between Cadiz and Seville, and is part of a Natural Reserve declared in 1989, with a total area of 448 hectares. From the observation points of the environment a rocky mass of limestone and dolomite can be seen, with vertical cuts, Mediterranean vegetation on the slopes and riparian vegetation in the bottom of the valley. Its best known value is the colony of griffon vultures, the largest in Western Andalusia and one of the most numerous in Europe; also inhabited by other birds of prey and fauna linked to the rocks and the Mediterranean forest. The area also has reinforced protection figures: ZEPA and Ramsar Site, as well as Natural Reserve. The Vía Verde de la Sierra crosses its surroundings and offers one of the most comfortable ways to contemplate the rock and its landscape, next to the Interpretation Center and Ornithological Observatory of Zaframagón. The visit is especially recommended on clear days, when the flight of the vultures can be better distinguished over the cliff. The soft light of early morning or late afternoon favors observation and photography, while in spring and autumn the landscape is usually clearer and with more pleasant temperatures.
