Peña de Arias Montano

The Peña de Arias Montano is a large limestone outcrop that dominates the valley of Alájar and the Alájar Caves, in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche. The relief forms an elevated rocky platform, with lapiaces, hollows and walls that explain its geological interest and the strong contrast between the bare rock and the surrounding mountain pasture. From the visiting area there is a wide panoramic view over the village of Alájar, the mountains and the nearby valleys. The place combines nature and heritage: next to the rock are the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, the sanctuary and other elements linked to the tradition of retreat of Benito Arias Montano, a figure that gives its name to the place.
