Description
The Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo is a natural maritime-terrestrial space of the eastern coast of Malaga, on the border with Granada, although the location that you give for Frigiliana corresponds to its environment of influence in the region of the Axarquia. It extends along about 12 km of coastline, with an approximate area of 1,913 ha and a marine strip that penetrates a mile out to sea; the maximum elevation reaches 325 m. It was declared a protected area by Law 2/1989 and then expanded and ordered as a Special Area of Conservation in 2015. The most characteristic features of the site are its limestone cliffs, coves, small beaches and steep slopes, with a very abrupt and little transformed coastal landscape. Among its natural values are the coexistence of terrestrial and marine environments and the presence of vegetation adapted to aridity and saltpeter, with species of Mediterranean and coastal scrub. It is interesting to visit it for its panoramic views over the Mediterranean, its natural viewpoints and the geological reading of the coastal front, where the relationship between relief, sea and vegetation can be clearly appreciated. In addition to its scenic attraction, it is a relevant enclave for its environmental protection and for preserving one of the best preserved maritime-terrestrial stretches of this Andalusian coast. In the official documentation it is also listed as an area of special importance for conservation, with figures such as ZEC and ZEPA associated with the Natura 2000 Network. Its interest for the visitor is in the coastal landscape and the ecological value of the whole, not in large facilities; it should be understood as a space for observation and quiet tour, especially suitable for those looking for coastal nature with its own identity.
