Description

The Brovales Reservoir is a reservoir on the Brovales river or stream, in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros, integrated in the Guadiana river basin. Its water surface is about 159 hectares and is mainly associated with irrigation, although it has also been used as a space for recreation and outdoor stay. The interest of the place is in the contrast between the dammed water and the landscape of pasture and soft relief of the south of Badajoz. From its banks an open environment can be appreciated, with good views of the reservoir basin and the nearby hills, especially at times of medium or low level, when the landforms and the riverside strip appear more clearly. In the local informative documentation it appears as a site linked to activities such as fishing, hiking and bird watching, in addition to its hydraulic function. There is no specific protection figure in the information consulted, so its value is mainly landscape and quiet use of the environment. The best time to visit is usually spring and autumn, when the heat is less and the light enhances the water and the meadow. At dawn and dusk the landscape gains contrast and is more grateful for photography.

How to get there

By car: from Jerez de los Caballeros there is access by the local network to Brovales and the surroundings of the reservoir; it is advisable to follow the signs to the reservoir or the riverside roads. Parking: I have not found a clearly documented official parking lot; it is usual to leave the vehicle in large areas next to accesses and nearby roads, without blocking passages. Trail: there is no official verified itinerary with distance and slope; the access seems more appropriate for a visit in a vehicle and a free walk in the immediate surroundings. Footwear: closed shoes with adherent soles, for dirt terrain and possible mud at the water's edge. Best season: spring and autumn. Warnings: the main use is hydraulic and recreational; there may be unconditioned stretches, mud after rains and unprotected margins. If you go to the shore, extreme caution.
