Description

The Palacio de Sada is a palace or manor house located in Sos del Rey Católico, Zaragoza, on the highest promontory of the town, in front of the parish church of San Esteban and next to the old castrum. It is also identified with the birthplace of Ferdinand II of Aragon, known as Ferdinand the Catholic, born here in 1452. Its origin dates back to the first rooms of the thirteenth century, although the building grew by successive additions to configure its complete plant in the late sixteenth century. It was also renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, on the basis of the ruins of the old castle, which explains its hybrid character between noble residence and architecture with a defensive air. From the architectural point of view, it presents a sober and rectangular facade, with a predominance of horizontal lines and small vertical projections at the ends as turrets. The presence of battlements and the location on the rock reinforce its image as a fortress, and the Sada family coat of arms appears on the façade. It currently houses the Fernando el Católico Interpretation Center and the Sos del Rey Católico Tourist Office. The building is catalogued as an Asset of Cultural Interest, Monument, which underlines its historical and patrimonial relevance within the monumental ensemble of the town.
