The Montaña de Sal de Cardona is a large salt diapir, visible as a whitish and reddish relief to the south of the town center. The salt outcrops in an elongated depression of about 100 hectares and forms a unique geological landscape, shaped by the vertical growth of saline materials and water erosion. Outcrops, slopes and former mining areas, today integrated in a cultural and informative park, can be distinguished in the area. From the point of visit, the contrast between the saline valley, the forms of the relief and the medieval environment of Cardona, with the castle as a visual reference nearby, can be appreciated. The interest is not only scenic: the site explains the history of one of the most important salt mines in Europe, with documented activity since ancient times and a museography focused on geology, mineralogy and botany of the valley. The area is included in the Plan of Areas of Natural Interest of Catalonia, which reinforces its value as a protected and visitable natural resource. The subway visit and the outdoor area allow visitors to understand the real scale of the site and the relationship between natural and industrial heritage. The best time to go is usually in good light, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the contrasts of the relief and the colors of the salt are best appreciated.
